Bevan & Lidstone: The Investigation of Crime offers comprehensive guidance to all police powers in operation. With the huge legislative and administrative changes affecting police powers since the publication of the second edition, this new edition has been extensively revised to include provisions in relation to football violence, terrorism, sexual offences, surveillance, financial investigation and computer crime.

One of the most significant and relevant changes has been the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 which deals with surveillance, both human and technical, including the interception of telephone calls and e-mail and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPA) dealing with disclosure and pre-trial, post charge procedure. Both are complex, have codes of practice and are seen as vulnerable to human rights challenges. The new edition has been broadened to include material on crime scene preservation, forensic issues, surveillance law, cross border powers, procedural issues, terrorism and financial powers.
